Moral Injury and the Role of Community in the Veteran's Homecoming - Duquesne University conference - register by Oct. 29

November 2, 2018

When war's invisible wounds to the mind, heart and soul are defined as a mental condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the effect is to scapegoat veterans and marginalize them from their community. Family, friends, and members of their church often feel uncertain of their role because they are not mental health professionals.

This one-day conference aims to address this by bringing together mental health professionals, veterans, civilians, and students to highlight the community's essential role in the homecoming of the veteran.

Attendees will learn:

  • The destructive effects of the psychiatric diagnosis of PTSD in local communities in west Africa and around the world
  • Moral injury as a social and political wound
  • Military sexual trauma and the community of women
  • The Veteran's Court as the legal community's response to veterans homecoming needs
  • The role of the religious community
  • How particular veterans have used their community commitments to find a pathway home.
