IIPDW Conference: Withdrawal from Psychiatric Drugs 2

February 10, 2023 February 11, 2023

3:00 pm - 6:30 pm GMT

The second online conference by the International Institute for Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal.

About the conference

This conference will present a mixture of talks, videos, discussions and panels to recap what we know so far about psychiatric drug withdrawal, and what we have still to learn. It will address questions such as:

  • ‘What can we learn from people with lived experience of withdrawal?’
  • ‘What are the different ways we can support someone in withdrawal as a peer or professional?
  • ‘What about children, young people and psychiatric drugs?’

The conference will also look at the latest developments in research and the world of online peer support and offer a practical method for withdrawing from antidepressants and other prescribed drugs. There’ll be opportunity for audience questions and a dedicated hour for audience discussion during this two-day conference – but most importantly, we hope conversations continue long after the conference is over.

Crossroads of Crisis: Dreams & Strategies for Collective Care

Crossroads of Crisis: Dreams & Strategies for Collective Care

February 19, 2023

12:00 pm - 3:00 pm ET

One synonym for crisis is “crossroads.” This moment offers us a significant opportunity to transform what crisis is, and what care can look like. The number of innovative programs and services (e.g. respite centers, psychiatric advance directives) that nurture autonomy and self-determination is growing, as is the understanding our trauma has multiple roots. We ask: What could happen if our crises were widely understood not as a personal failure, but as a symptom of a world that is suffering? What if our care systems prioritized resourcing communities, rather than “outsourcing” to professionals? What if we met these global inflection points with a vast spectrum of collective care tools and networks?

IDHA’s Fall 2022/Spring 2023 Training Series, Crossroads of Crisis, reimagines the crisis continuum – interrogating what crisis is, where it comes from, how to respond to it with curiosity and compassion, and the role of providers and communities. Building on former IDHA offerings Crisis as Catalyst and Cultivating Community, we will ground our learning in the voices of lived experience and approach the theme of crisis from multiple lenses and dimensions. Drawing inspiration and lessons from current community-based efforts, we will practice how to disrupt paradigms of coercion, create personal codes of ethics, and attune to the needs of those we support in professional and nonprofessional roles. We hope you will join us in building a world beyond 988.

Louis Weinstock's AD4E workshop 'How The World Is Making Our Children Mad, And What To Do About It' is based on his book of the same name and will explore how to honour the wisdom in children's distress.

It will be of interest to counsellors and psychotherapists and indeed anyone who support children and young people and who wants to empower rather than pathologise.

Mad in America Town Hall: Selfhood, Family, and the Gift of Madness

Mad in America Town Hall: Selfhood, Family, and the Gift of Madness

February 23, 2023

11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST

A private screening of the documentary “Drunk on Too Much Life” followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A with the producers and stars of the film.

Mad in America is pleased to announce a screening of the new 75-minute film “Drunk on Too Much Life.”

"Drunk on Too Much Life" is an intimate and powerful documentary following the filmmakers’ 21-year-old daughter’s mind-opening journey from locked-down psych wards and diagnostic labels towards expansive worlds of creativity, connection, and greater meaning. On their journey, the family begins to question the widespread idea that mental illness should be understood in purely biological terms and learns the myriad ways that madness has meaning. Recovery is not a straight path to being cured but a crooked bumpy journey and series of small awakenings.
