Two social activist authors will present on the topic of the suicide prevention industry next week, Wednesday, June 1st at 3:00 pm pacific/6:00 pm Eastern. Each panelist will have thirty minutes to present. The following hour will be allotted for discussion arising from audience questions.
Author Robert Whitaker, in 2001 published Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine, and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill. With that book, he began more than two decades of challenges and critiques of the Mental Health System. Whitaker has continued to write other books challenging mental health services and provide through www.madinamerica.com a platform for others to write and be heard.
Rob Wipond, investigative journalist and author of the soon to be published book, Our Consent is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment, and Abusive Guardianships will, along with fellow panelist Whitaker, critique crisis lines, suicide prevention strategies and specifically the U.S government’s roll out of 988 and it’s challenges to privacy and the potential increased use of forced interventions.
The meeting is a part of MFI’s regularly scheduled educational series called ‘Judi’s Room,’ a collaboration between MFI and " I Love You, Lead On" (a favored quote by ADA champion, Justin Dart)

This webinar will discuss the history and future of the Soteria model, an evidence-based alternative to acute hospitalization for persons experiencing psychiatric crises. Soteria provides intensive support in a communal residential setting with emphasis on humane interactions and understanding. Replications of the Soteria model have been few and far between since the remarkable success of the original Soteria experiment spearheaded by Loren Mosher and Alma Menn in the 1970s. Recently, a wide-ranging renewal of the Soteria model has taken place in Israel with very positive outcomes. The need for alternatives to police intervention and hospitalization for crisis stabilization has led to development of short-term residential facilities in many US states. Following the success of The Parachute Project, NYS has been a pioneer in promoting the establishment of such residential alternatives with an eye on further expansion. The discussion will consider how the Soteria model would be uniquely impactful in NY State.
Featuring:Pesach Lichtenberg, Psychiatrist based in Jerusalem, Founder of Soteria Israel; Voyce Hendrix, Director, Soteria San Jose (1976-78), Social Worker, St, Paul, MN; Yana Jacobs, Counselor, Soteria San Jose, Social Worker, Santa Cruz, CA; Daniel Bergner, Contributing Writer, New York Times Magazine, Author of upcoming book: The Mind and the Moon — My Brother, the Science of Our Brains and the Search for our Psyches; Elan Cohen, Clinical Psychology Doctoral Candidate and former Peer Speciallist with Parachute Program; Peter Stastny, Psychiatric Consultant and Co-Founder www.intar.org

A space where families can exchange information and share experiences to foster a dialogue that goes beyond the predominant mainstream medical treatment model. Welcome! This Mad in America (MIA) forum hosts online parent support groups. We have started these groups in response to the many inquiries we get from parents who are skeptical of conventional drug-based treatments for children struggling with mental health issues and are now looking for alternatives. We currently offer two groups—one in Europe and one in the United States/Canada; all are conducted in English. This initiative, begun in the fall of 2018, has generated strong interest, and we hope to accommodate as many people as possible. Therefore, the U.S./Canada group now operates on a weekly, drop-in basis, as your schedules and needs allow.
The support groups, which last 90 minutes, are moderated and provide a confidential space where people can share information and experiences that foster a dialogue about psychiatric diagnosis, the use of psychiatric medications, and non-drug alternatives. We hope these groups will help parents and other family members to feel less alone as they struggle to best help the children in their lives. Everyone in the group has the opportunity to speak, and everyone is expected to be respectful of others. The moderators occasionally invite guest speakers to the meetings. Although MIA is hosting these forums, the moderators do not represent MIA. Their opinions and suggestions are their own.
Please write to me with any questions you may have about the support groups. You may also want to visit our Family Resources section, which provides information about drugs, blogs written by both professionals and parents, Q&As, research news, and other informational links.
