20th ISPS International Congress in the United Kingdom

20th ISPS International Congress in the United Kingdom

August 30, 2017 September 3, 2017

Can a conference be a catalyst for change? It is exactly this wish that inspired the title and theme of the 2017 ISPS international congress.

Sadly this is a wish born out of frustration. Attitudes, practices and services too often seem barely touched by the steadily developing understanding of psychological and social aspects of psychosis and of what is helpful for people who experience it. So we aim for this conference to be not only about the valuable sharing of new research, ideas and developments, but also, as in the title, about making real change happen. The large number of organizations who have given their support to this conference can be seen here.

We are delighted to be meeting in the exciting city of Liverpool. Carl Jung saw it as 'the pool of life' and we hope its rich heritage (not just football and music!) will make it an energizing setting for a conference thinking about change. Information about the conference social programme, including canapes at the Cavern Club and an evening aboard the ferry ‘cross the Mersey, can be found here http://www.isps2017uk.org/registration and also take a look at these ideas for other things to do in Liverpool.

Delegates at previous international conferences have often commented on how ISPS events stand out. They point to the unique mix of opportunities not only to learn from high quality presentations, but also to join a rich dialogue between people with a wealth of experience and expertise, a fertile mix of professionals from a wide range of disciplines, and people whose experience and expertise comes through personal experience of psychosis.

ISPS conferences have also traditionally been warm and welcoming gatherings, where people go away feeling inspired and reinvigorated. We hope this one will be no exception and look forward very much to welcoming you to Liverpool in August 2017.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry

EHPP is now accepting submissions from a range of disciplines, including health, humanistic, and indigenous psychology, child/adolescent, forensic, developmental, and geriatric psychiatry, social work, mental health counseling, and couple and family therapy.

Submit online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/ehpp

Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry (EHPP) is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research reports, reviews, essays, commentaries, and case reports examining the ethical ramifications of unjust practices in psychiatry and psychology. As the official publication of the International Society of Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry (ISEPP), it supports ISEPP’s mission to use the standards of scientific inquiry and critical reasoning to address the ethics of psychology and psychiatry. EHPP fills a niche untouched by other psychology and psychiatry journals. Past issues have included articles examining the withdrawal effects of Prozac and Paxil, holistic preparation of soldiers for combat, psychiatric medicating of children, marketing tactics of pharmaceutical companies, involuntary psychiatric treatment, brain neuroplasticity, and the benefits of non-pharmacological intervention. EHPP publishes articles that employ both quantitative and qualitative methodologies as well as lived experience accounts and critical analyses. EHPP seeks to provide a space for high quality scholarship, ethical discourse, and the creation of new knowledge that contributes to a more just and humane society.

Visit http://www.springerpub.com/ehpp to learn more about the journal.

Call for Workshop Presentations at Critical Perspectives in Mental Health Conference

Call for Workshop Presentations at Critical Perspectives in Mental Health Conference

N/A
September 11, 2017

Claims are made that mental health services are changing for the better. Although changes have been made in terms of location, structures and language, has anything inherently changed in the way mental health services respond to human distress? What could be construed as a ‘better’ mental health service? Is ‘better’ understood in terms of: more funding, access, choice of ‘therapies’, empowerment, influence, collaboration, less medication, no coercion, a lesser role for psychiatry, no psychiatry? This conference, now in its 9th year, aims to explore and debate critical perspectives on and beyond:

  • What do we understand by ‘better’ mental health services?
  • Do we need mental health services at all?
  • If so, what should they look like? If not, what other ways are there?
  • The politics of changing mental health services

Confirmed Key Note Speakers:

Oor Mad History/Mad People’s History and Identity: A group of people based in Edinburgh, Scotland, who are interested in the newly emerging field of “Mad Studies”.

Jim van Os: A Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Maastricht University, The Netherlands

Diana Rose: A mental health service user all her adult life and now Professor of User-Led Research at King’s College London.

Jolijn Santegoeds: A user/survivor of psychiatry, and founder of a protest group in the Netherlands called "Rage against Isolation!".

Slí Eile: A voluntary organisation in Cork that supports people to develop a strong foundation for mental health recovery by harnessing the power of intentional residential community, collective enterprise and discovery-based life-planning.

Jay Watts: A consultant clinical psychologist, psychotherapist and activist, who also identifies as a psychiatric survivor.

Call for Oral Presentations/Workshops (45 minutes’ duration):

Please submit an abstract (in Word - 250 words max) related to the conference theme and outlining its aims and intentions by 11 September 2017. Please also submit a brief bio (in Word - 150 words max). Stand Bi Me: Launch of Mind's Bisexuality & Mental Health Resource

Stand Bi Me: Launch of Mind's Bisexuality & Mental Health Resource

September 19, 2017

Over the last few decades, social awareness and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, queer and non-binary (LGBTQ+) people have increased phenomenally.

However, not everyone has benefited equally from these improvements, including bisexual people, who unfortunately are still too often disregarded or misunderstood.

In fact, a recent ONS report found that people who identify as bisexual experience significantly higher levels of anxiety than any other group, as well as lower levels of life satisfaction and happiness.

This is why we, the leading mental health charity in England and Wales, have been working on a resource to help service providers and employers become genuinely bi-inclusive.

We are delighted to invite you to the launch event, kindly hosted by Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP at their London Bridge offices.

  • 17:30-18:00: Arrival, teas and coffes
  • 18:00-19:00: Welcome and panel session + Q&A
  • 19:00-20:00 Networking drinks and canapes

panel of outstanding speakers will help us explore the issues bisexual people face, with a particular focus on their experiences of discrimination and the impact on their mental health.

Speakers will include:

  • Jonathan Andrews, co-founder of the London Bisexual Network and author of the publication that will be launched at the event
  • Sanisha Wynter, who will share her personal experience as a black bisexual woman
  • Dominic Arnall, Head of Projects and Programmes at Stonewall
  • Marcel Vige, Head of Equality Improvement at Mind
  • The panel will be introduced by Daisy Reeves, Partner, international LGBT champion and co-founder of BLP’s LGBT group.

We expect this event to sell out, so please do secure your ticket now by completing your registration.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Education Night: Joshua Walters

    September 27, 2017

This presentation will be a Comedic Narrative based on:

    1) The Mental Health of a Childhood Friend’s Growing Up in SF
    2) Josh’s Mental Health as an Adolescent and Now
    3) The Mental Health of our Society Currently

    Biography:

Madhouse Rhythm creator Joshua Walters is a coach, performer and producer who “explores language, creativity, beatboxing and madness”
    Josh's TED Talks link

At the moment Joshua is on a quest to launch a global day without technology called UnPlug! With the help of the National Performance Network and in partnership with Reboot’s National Day of Unplugging, Joshua has set out to curate an interactive musical comedy experience, highlighting the benefits of disconnecting from our technological devices. He is a regular contributor to Snap Judgment, a weekly storytelling radio show on NPR with TV broadcasts on PBS.

Walters is best known for his work on TED Talks, for his talk entitled On Being Crazy Enough, which explores the bipolar spectrum and is now at 1.5M views and counting. He is involved in mental health advocacy nation-wide and takes part in mentoring youth on the creative spectrum.

His eclectic combination of performance disciplines and activity as an educator in mental health has given Walters a national platform and audience. Walters is a National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) State Speaker and in 2002, he co-founded the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Young Adults Chapter in San Francisco, one of the few support groups specifically for mentally ill young adults in the country. Walters speaks as a mental health educator and has engaged in mental health advocacy at universities, conventions and fundraisers. As a facilitator, Walters uses humor to address the often dark subject of mental illness, re-framing it as a positive. *Mental Skillness*

'Keeping Control' Mental Health Safeguarding Research Sense Making Event

    September 29, 2017

The NIHR School for Social Care Research has funded the user-led research project Keeping Control: Exploring mental health service user perspectives on targeted violence and hostility in the context of adult safeguarding.

You can find out more about the project and listen to the perspectives of the service user researchers involved on the webpage here.

"We would enormously value your input into a one day research ‘sense-making’ event we’ll be holding in central London on 29th September 2017. The idea is to discuss what we’ve found with mental health and adult safeguarding stakeholders to see where our research can make the most impact on policy, practice and improving adult safeguarding for people who are targeted for harassment, violence or abuse because of their mental health problems.

We are delighted that the day will be launched with a keynote speech from Dr Adi Cooper OBE, Adult Safeguarding Lead, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services and Visiting Professor at the University of Bedfordshire. Dr Cooper was instrumental in ensuring the inclusion of Making Safeguarding Personal in the Care Act 2014.

We also plan to premiere a ‘rough cut’ of a 3-minute digital story animation by Inkwell Arts exploring the research and some key themes for practice.

The discussion and outcomes of the day will be captured and a workshop report outlining recommendations for change and development from the field will be published and disseminated as part of the research impact strategy. With participant consent, we will actively use social media at the event for live broadcasting to widen access to the discussion."

This conference will give practitioners a whole body approach to successfully diagnose and treat underlying issues contributing to the manifestations of neurological, social, and behavioral disorders.  Research has revealed that many disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, and autism spectrum disorders often have biomedical causes that contribute to symptoms, from nutritional deficiencies to chronic infections. Patients have better outcomes when these causes are addressed and treated through a combination of specialized testing and nutritional therapies, even in combination with traditional approaches.

Each story is unique. Each start in life, a little different. Yet too often, the diagnosis of autism is given to parents and the future starts to look very uncertain, even bleak. That is why this year at the Love & Autism Conference, we are countering that negative message of autism with real, honest and raw stories from autistic people themselves.

What we say matters, how we talk shapes our worldview.

Storytelling and listening to other people’s stories changes the lives of the listeners

Storytelling creates power and can shape a better future for autistic individuals

Storytelling gives power back to the autistic individual and their families

Storytelling can give hope, especially for those who have lived with a negative view of autism for too long
