Doors to Wellbeing Peer Specialist Monthly Webinar Series: Using Your Recovery Story to Connect and Inspire, by Kyneta Lee

Doors to Wellbeing Peer Specialist Monthly Webinar Series: Using Your Recovery Story to Connect and Inspire, by Kyneta Lee

November 27, 2018

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM PST

One of the greatest assets of mental health peer specialists is the ability to share our recovery stories as a way to connect with people and inspire those who may be struggling. However, sometimes it is hard for us to reconcile the negative experiences of our past with the positive role model we are today. Using the "Hero's Journey" as a framework to reflect on your recovery story can help you connect with your moments of heroism in your past and use them to help and inspire others. This webinar will help mental health peer specialists explore the "Hero's Journey" and how to tell their story in a way that presents a healing and hopeful message.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify steps to apply the "Hero's Journey" structure to recovery stories.
  • Discuss the importance of becoming the hero of our own recovery journey.
  • Examine the benefits of storytelling for both the teller and listeners of the story.

Kyneta Lee has worked in the field of Peer Support for 8 years with the Mental Health Association in Delaware.  She is currently a Peer Educator and is an Advanced Level Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitator.

Gabor Maté, MD – Workshop: Addiction: Healing and Rebuilding Trust in the Whole Family - West Sacramento, CA

Gabor Maté, MD – Workshop: Addiction: Healing and Rebuilding Trust in the Whole Family - West Sacramento, CA

December 1, 2018

This workshop (developed for this event, and presented here for the first time ever) is a unique opportunity, in a very small group setting, to explore how family issues and interactions form an integral part of the addiction process.

Through compassion, insight, and understanding, we will develop new ways of communicating and interacting with our loved ones struggling with addiction, and we will gain deeper understanding into our own wounds and their impact on our behavior and communication.

Through gentle, compassionate discussion and insight, Gabor teaches us how we can listen to, understand, and engage with one another, rebuild trust and connection, and learn to set safe, healthy boundaries.

Some participants will have the opportunity to work directly with Gabor during the workshop.

December 2, 2018

This unique workshop, also a first-time event, offers professionals a unique opportunity to deepen skills in attunement, trust building, and reaching even the most challenging clients.  In a small group setting. Gabor will speak about the neurobiology of addiction through the lens of early attachment, bonding and trauma, in a simple and accessible way.

With the foundation established, Gabor will then will offer practical techniques for creating and enhancing safety (which he describes as ‘not absence of threat’ but ‘presence of connection’) with clients. Using safety as the basis for deep, effective engagement and client recovery, Gabor will address some of the most challenging issues that professionals face in working with addicted populations and their families.

Gabor will also discuss in depth the importance of exploring the counselor’s unhealed parts of self — even among those of us with decades of experience — and how this affects our ability to reach clients, and to establish safe boundaries. The day will include opportunities for interaction and some participants will have the opportunity to work direct with Gabor during the workshop.

International Association of Peer Supporters 12th Annual Conference

December 3, 2018

The conference will be offering 2 1/2 days of workshops, caucuses and keynote speakers beginning Monday morning and continuing until noon on Wednesday. The call for proposals will be available soon, as will registration.

As our theme suggests, we will be reinforcing the values of peer support, as well as looking to the future as we increase our presence in many varied settings. We are asking all workshops to relate to  the National Practice Guidelines and will have opportunities to discuss the Guidelines and offer suggestions for additions and revisions as we design our future. We hope to have workshops that connect us to all settings including mental health, substance use, whole health and integrated care, forensics, youth and young adult, older adults, veterans, LGBTQ, and more. We also will welcome those involved in peer support as Family Partners.
