Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul.
With this film, we hope to touch many people, begin a conversation, and develop a common understanding about how trauma impacts our individual lives, communities and society as a whole.*
Join us for our first online screening the week of June 8-14th for a week-long screening plus a 7-day teaching series on trauma with leading experts in the field.

Seminar and discussion with Dr Harry Yi-Jui Wu (University of Hong Kong) and Dr China Mills (City, University of London)
About this event
This seminar will examine how the universality of mental health has been constructed and negotiated, within the World Health Organisation and in the Movement for Global Mental Health. The speakers will consider how Global Mental Health stories its own history - frequently overlooking that psychiatric classification has long been global, especially in its quest for international comparison of 'mental illness'; and how it engages with critiques of its coloniality - often by framing colonialism as racist denial of care located in the past, rather than something that wraps around the present.
There is increasing awareness of the difficulties in coming off psychiatric drugs, with antidepressants receiving much of the attention in research and services. The effects of coming off antipsychotics have been less well explored, and the difficulty of distinguishing between withdrawal effects and relapse may lead to drugs being restarted or doses increased.
The event aims to explore the lived experience perspective when attempting to distinguish withdrawal effects from relapse.
Professor Joanna Moncrieff will introduce the event. Psychiatric drug withdrawal expert Dr Mark Horowitz will discuss some of the most recent research in this area, joined by a panel including service users and carers to have a lively discussion of their different experiences.
The first hour will be the talk and panel discussion, and there will then be half an hour for questions from the audience. Conversation and the sharing of experiences will be encouraged in the chat.

Many mental health services in high-, middle- and low-income countries around the world are failing people. Not only is access to services limited, but many people in distress and experiencing mental health crises are not receiving the support they need to feel better and move forward. Many people with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities are disempowered by mental health services and denied the right to decide over their own health and life choices. Some are further institutionalized and subject to coercive measures such as involuntary admission, forced treatment, seclusion, and restraints. These practices negatively impact people’s physical and mental health.
There is a different path that countries and services can take - no matter what part of the world. This is the path towards rights-based services that respect people’s right to make decisions about their treatment and lives, that are free from coercive practices, that consider people in the context of their whole lives, that support people to be included in their community. These services also learn from and utilize the vast expertise of people with lived experience in order to provide responsive care and support.
Join us on 10 June at 15.00 CET for the launch of WHO’s new guidance on community mental health services: Promoting person-centred and rights-based approaches. You will learn about innovative mental health services that are revolutionizing mental health practices and hear personal testimonies from people who use mental health services and service providers, as well as from national and international policy-makers who are calling for a sea-change in mental health. The event will include interpretation in Arabic, French and Spanish, and captioning will also be available.
