Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You may want to have your son tested for Lyme at specialized labs such as IGeneX and/or Advanced Labs. The standard ELISA test which your son likely had is unreliable and results in an inordinate number of false negatives. Also, please know that if in fact he does have Lyme, recovery/remission is hard won.
Yes. Thank you. I couldn’t have explained it better myself. This subject absolutely belongs on MIA. I have been fielding messages for 48 hrs since this article was published mostly filled with gratitude for the message that psychiatry needs to wake up to this very real differential diagnosis.
Chronic Lyme disease is primarily a clinical diagnosis. However, there are very few doctors within mainstream medicine who will even acknowledge the possibility. So you can imagine the dilemma. One must find a Lyme Literate MD (many of whom happen to be psychiatrists which I forgot to mention) or an LLND. There are only a handful of labs in the world that we can rely on for a reliable diagnostic assessment which can test either antibodies or blood culture. IGeneX in CA and Advanced Labs in Sharon Hill PA are two.

In no way did I intend to imply that the root cause is solely Lyme. That said, it must be considered as a differential diagnosis.
