How do you motivate your child to learn skills?

From Mad in Finland: I use the word motivation here to mean that the child is so eager to learn a skill that he can put in the effort to learn it. Traditionally, children have been motivated to learn new things by rewarding them for desired behavior and making sure that something unpleasant for the child follows from unwanted behavior. A skills-based approach consciously tries to avoid this “stick and carrot” method. It has been replaced by different motivational methods that are more fun, more exciting and better suited to learning skills.
