There is also criticism that treatment in mental health care is insufficiently humane. As a result, hospital stays are much shorter and more focused on independent living afterward. The recovery movement argues that by learning to cope with the condition, people can still assume full citizenship. The idea is that people should be able to choose for themselves between medication, treatment, and meaning. Of course, recovery and lived experience can be helpful, but medical treatments can complement these. Therefore, they are complementary, because treatments don’t have to conflict with each other.
