From Mad in Puerto Rico: Among the identified causes are the workload, isolation during residence, the inflexibility of schedules, the difficulty of sustaining the cost of living while being a resident, burnout, long working hours, the risky nature of work, the increase in clinical responsibilities and the pressure to plan their future careers. It is emphasized that there is an increase in levels of sadness among residents, many of whom must move on several occasions to meet the requirements of their degrees, losing their support and stability networks as they begin their professional careers.
On the other hand, the report highlights that systemic reforms are needed to address emotional discomfort among residents, and not only superficial interventions. This also involves a process of de-stigmatizing emotional well-being.
