āHow is supporting young people around suicide different than supporting adults?
-How can I better understand what my loved one is going through?
-What qualifies as a crisis?
-What alternatives exist to conventional clinical mental health responses?
This online three-hour workshop on Friday July 11th from 1-4pm Eastern Time will explore these questions and more, offering critical insights for supporting young people navigating feelings, thoughts and actions around suicide. Participants will come away with communication tools where new possibilities can emerge for the person struggling as well as for the relationship.
Alternatives to Suicide was developed in 2008 by people whoāve struggled with suicidal thoughts and attempts. It began as a support group and has since grown into a harm reduction approach that can be used by clinicians and other providers, family members, peer supporters and anyone else interested in better supporting someone who might be navigating thoughts of killing themself.
Join us for this introductory overview onĀ Monday July 21st from 12-4pm Eastern Time.Ā The first half of the session will review the history of and evidence for this approach and some of the fundamental paradigm shifts that it involves. The second half will include discussion of the VCVC dialogue model with role plays to help illustrate how it works.
Presenters to include VCVC creator, Caroline Mazel-Carlton!
Hyperbolic tapering ā what is it and how do you do it? Find out in this webinar for clinicians.
Psychiatric researcher and clinician Mark Horowitz, MBBS, PhD, originator of the Horowitz-Taylor method for hyperbolic tapering of psychotropics and lead author of the 2024Ā Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines for Antidepressants, Benzodiazepines, Gabapentinoids and Z-drugs, will present an overview of the facilitators in implementing careful tapering in clinical practice, as well as some barriers.
Mark also will touch upon a few advanced techniques, such as micro-tapering, the art of updosing and reinstatement, and managing protracted withdrawal.
A short question and answer period will follow Markās presentation. A video of the webinar will be available for those who register but find they cannot attend.Ā Please register for this webinar today.
TheĀ Maudsley Deprescribing GuidelinesĀ have been endorsed by the UK Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. With this book as a basis, Mark, who is a Clinical Research Fellow in Psychiatry in the NHS, has been commissioned by Health Education England to prepare a teaching module for NHS clinicians on how to safely stop antidepressants.
Mark holds a PhD from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at Kingās College London in the neurobiology of depression and antidepressant action. He is Visiting Lecturer in Psychopharmacology at Kingās College London and an Associate Editor of the journal Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology.
He co-authored theĀ Royal College of Psychiatristsā guidance on āStopping AntidepressantsāĀ and his work informed the recent NICE guidelines on safe tapering of psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, benzodiazepines and z-drugs. He has worked with the NHS to develop national guidance for safe deprescribing for clinicians.
Mark has written many papers about safe approaches to tapering psychiatric medications, including publications in The Lancet Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, and Schizophrenia Bulletin.
His own experience of difficulty of coming off psychiatric medications has informed his interest in rational psychopharmacology and deprescribing psychiatric medication.
