It always interests me when people become psychiatrists specifically to try to bring change to the profession (like Thomas Szasz). A lot of the time they face significant resistance and eventually distance themselves from it. I’m really glad people are bringing alternative treatment options to people who are suffering. It’s amazing that colonization was so overlooked as a factor in depression – but so many factors are. I think the comments directly comparing psychiatry to colonization are also quite apt. I feel that diagnoses now are a major form of discrimination in another guise (or at the very least a major miscalculation of the causes of psychological distress), but this is largely unrecognized by society and the profession itself.
