  • As a health psychologist, currently doing some continuing education work for the American Diabetes Association, I have always been stunned by psychiatrist’s response to the adverse side effects of their medications. With anti-psychotics, its generally a shrug, as the patient gains weight and progresses into Type II diabetes, or a suggestion that we refer the patient onto another specialist (endocrinology or weight loss clinic) to manage the side effects of the psychiatric prescription. On one hand the psychiatrists love to wrap themselves in the white coat, and declare themselves to be the ‘real doctor’ and at the same time often refuse to manage the whole health of their patients.
