  • Great thinking outside the box, RISN.

I just get very concerned about sending vulnerable people to church programs, given that for so many, the Christian church is another controlling, corrupt, abusive system and has a history of doing the footwork of imperialism and colonialism. Can anyone do a better job of translating that down to how that can impact on people’s everyday lives, especially vulnerable people?

  • Hi Sera,

You mention a doctoral study by Sharon Batt.

Sharon is another medical journalist who wrote a book called Patient No More about the breast cancer industry. I found it a couple of years ago, wanting more info when someone dear to me got diagnosed with breast cancer. I couldn’t believe it: page after page til the end read exactly like Anatomy of an Epidemic! I immediately introduced her and Bob to each others’ work via email.

Recently, I just picked up In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, by Mihael Pollan. Deja vu, all over again, this time about the food industry, research, marketing and influence on doctors.

I’m picturing joint conferences. What a way to reach cross-over crowds.

Thanks for your writing, Sera. It’s powerful.

  • Someone Else,
Sounds like you’ve been through hell and back, and come out a warrior! Thank you for hearing me and clarifying your position. That detail of Sidd’s story must have hit a nerve because your precious boy child went through it, too.

So sounds like we are roaring together, at the same things, and with Cindi and all the others here!

    Blessed be the roar-riors!!! 😉

  • Fred,

I love your question: How can we help her?
And, more to the point, how can we join together to become that movement, that “nation wide wave”?

In her comment/response of March 7, 2014 at 1:21 am, Cindi, herself, offers 3 specific steps we can take (depending on our interests and how much we want to commit) to help her and ourselves.

Don’t let her fool you, though. Cindi has many more than 3 suggestions. Check her website: http://www.MentalHealthRightsYES.org
and sign up for action alerts for her son and the many other people she works with for this liberation movement!

Rob (Wipond), may your words be prophetic: May the wave be rolling in!

  • OneDayAtATime, you are doing great! Getting the doc/treatment team to watch Dan Mackler’s videos should be very effective!

There is also an 11-page affidavit that Bob (our Bob, Robert Whitaker) wrote (that he may be expanding soon, I hope) that is a mini version of Anatomy of an Epidemic–more doable for most folks than handing them the book. I’ll write MIA and ask them to post it so lots of people can use it as a resource.

Then, after that, I’d offer Marcia Angel’s NY Review of Books 3 part article on Anatomy and a couple of other similar titles. Marcia Angell is a Senior Lecturer in Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and former Editor in Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine. May 2013.

Part 1, The Epidemic of Mental Illness: Why? June 23, 2011

Part 2, The Illusions of Psychiatry, July 14, 2011

Part 3, ‘The Illusions of Psychiatry’: An Exchange, August 18, 2011

Build on your strength! Good luck!

  • Duane, you seem more concerned that it was another man that raped Sidd, than the fact that he was raped. Please check your homophobia. I am tired and enraged when men are only concerned about rape when it’s men against men, and never utter a word when it’s the common, everyday variety of rape by men of women. Rape is rape and is a soul affronting trauma.
