The Mental Health Channel & Beyond: What Does it Really Mean...
How are we going to get anywhere at all if people believe that speaking to alternatives just means occasionally putting something out there that isnāt about psychiatric drugs? Assuming that the Mental Health Channel folks genuinely believe theyāre offering a product thatās āwell-rounded,ā how do we even get to a point where they understand why itās not, and can make a well-reasoned decision about where to go from there? Yes, itās about the drugs. But, in some ways, no, itās not at all about them. Itās about the damage we do by convincing people that thereās no other choice than to take the drugs because of a āchemical imbalanceā or āchronic brain diseaseā that, just like cancer, will only get worse if it goes untreated. It's about the inescapable nature of the boxes people put us in (even some of those boxes not filled up with pills).
Dr. Pies and Psychiatry’s ‘Solid Center’
Ronald Pies, MD, is one of American's most eminent and prestigious psychiatrists.Ā He is the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Psychiatric Times, and he is a Professor of Psychiatry at both Syracuse and Tufts. I disagree with many of Dr. Pies' contentions, and I have expressed these disagreements in detail in various posts. But there is one area where I have to acknowledge Dr. Pies' efforts:Ā he never gives up in his defense of his beloved psychiatry, even in the face of the most damaging counter-evidence. For instance, on more than one occasion, he has asserted, with apparent sincerity and conviction, that psychiatry never promoted the chemical imbalance theory of depression!
