In a sample of 175 persons with severe mental illness, researchers at the University of Hawaii found that rates of trauma exposure and PTSD comorbidity were high and associated with severity of depression, substance abuse, overall mental health and physical health functioning. The authors conclude that PTSD mediates the adverse effects of trauma exposure on the severity of depression and overall physical and mental health. Results appear in Schizophrenia Research.
