“The Rise of All-Purpose Antidepressants”

A short article in Scientific American Mind reviews the rapidly expanding array of diverse ailments and conditions for which antidepressant drugs are being prescribed.

“As the third most frequently taken medication in the U.S., researchers estimate that 8 to 10 percent of the population is taking an antidepressant,” reports Scientific American Mind. Conditions for which the drugs are being prescribed include abuse and dependence, ADHD, anxiety, autism, bipolar, eating disorders, fibromyalgia, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, arthritis, deficits caused by stroke, hot flashes, premature ejaculation and more.
