Tom Stockmann, MD – Long Bio

REFLECTIONS OF A UK PSYCHIATRY TRAINEE

Tom Stockmann is a psychiatrist in London. He is critical of what he sees as the existing excessive biomedical emphasis in psychiatry. He is currently training in peer-supported Open Dialogue, a social network-based approach to mental healthcare in which multidisciplinary staff are taught to work with families and networks as an integral part of their approach to care. Following this training, he plans to be part of a UK-wide multicentre study of Open Dialogue vs. treatment as usual.
Tom also has an interest in medical education, and is currently a Fellow in Medical Education in his NHS trust, and Honorary Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London. He is keen to increase the emphasis on subjectivity and emotions in medical student training through the use of student psychotherapy schemes.
