The New York Times reports that patients in South Dakota seeking treatment for symptoms associated with ‘mental disorders,’ or disabilities such as severe diabetes or blindness, were often sent to nursing homes or long-term care facilities. “In a scathing rebuke of the state’s health care system, the Justice Department said on Monday that thousands of patients were being held unnecessarily in sterile, highly restrictive group homes.”
