Rantala’s Response to Criticism of Research

From Mad in Finland: Markus J. Rantala and his research group presented a scientific model for the development of bipolar disorder based on existing evidence. According to it, bipolar disorder is due to low-grade inflammation and chronic stress caused by Western lifestyle which makes the internal clock asynchronous in those with a genetic predisposition to it. Rantala’s article received a furious reception in the Finnish media from a few professors of psychiatry. They claimed that they were able to show that the mechanism of genetics had not been solved (which is said to be the most difficult problem for medicine to solve).
