From Terapeutiska Tankar: In this podcast, sociologist Sanne te Meerman from the university of Groningen talks about reification to licensed Swedish psychologist and PhD students Osame Salim and Magnus Karlsson-Good. In the conversation several points are outlined, amongst others:
- Reification: Constructs that describe but do not explain behaviors, such as ADHD, are often mistaken for causes of behavior.
- Effects of reification such as decrease in self-efficacy and transfer of agency from alleged patients to (medical) professionals
- Misrepresentation and selective discourse on heritability studies
- The ecological fallacy; the flawed suggestion that group studies can predict brain size of those with ADHD in general and in particular cases
- The problematic term “neurodevelopmental disorders” introduced by the DSM 5.
