From Mad in Sweden: There is a big gap in the discourse about human difficulties. A gap between biological determinism and given outcome. Now it seems that the outcome only wants to be derived from biology – the medical perspective. An approach that promotes passivity in the individual. Passivity in the sense that the individual gets the outcome – the effect of his difficulties – explained to him in terms of biology – that it is something independent of himself that created what is now. However, it appears that there is no consistent relationship between these observable behaviors and the explanatory models. The method we try to use is thus not always fruitful, but instead contributes a little too often with continued limitations for people who say they want to get on with their lives. This applies to children and young people in particular as they are left out of the adult world’s reason. The prevailing view today, which is based on the ideas of neuropsychiatry, constantly acts as a starting point when it comes to the difficulties and possible development of children and young people. Furthermore, there also seems to be an interest in identifying problems according to these principles where there are no problems.
