From Mad in Sweden: How does healthcare solve this? Yes, in specialist psychiatry we see a sharp increase in referrals with questions about ADHD, for this patient group. So there are mothers of small children who managed to get through life but who get stress-related problems from work and housework. When this patient/mother comes to primary care, a neuropsychiatric screening is done on the patient – not infrequently the patient has read up and got the idea that the explanation for the stress is an undetected ADHD. Since all people have symptoms of ADHD (and many mothers experience the toddler years as stressful), primary care summarizes a picture of symptoms and a functional impact in a referral to psychiatry.
