Report for the Improvement of Mental Health Results – Chapter 1: The Current Mental Health System is Extremely Counterproductive and Harmful

From Mad in Brasil: Conventional treatments of the mental health system are immensely harmful and counterproductive, often imposed on patients who do not want them. The excessive focus on psychiatric drugs is reducing the recovery rate of people diagnosed with severe mental disorder from possible 80% to 5%, and reducing their life expectancy by about 20 years. Psychiatric incarceration, euphemistically called “involuntary hospitalization”, is equally counterproductive and harmful, increasing patients’ traumas and being massively associated with suicides. Harmful psychiatric interventions have been imposed on people without considering the facts about the treatments and their damage, in violation of International Legislation.
