The Role of Anti-Obesity Drugs in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder: A Critical Review

From Mad in Italy: In the article, Maviglia M., Coyate N., and Ceccanti M., explore the topic of the use of anti-obesity drugs (AOM) in the treatment of alcoholism problems (AUD). This topic is particularly relevant because many individuals have both weight problems and alcohol dependence, as these two conditions often occur together.

The article draws attention to the fact that the use of AOMs for these two conditions is not yet supported by scientifically solid data, but is based on studies with evident limitations in methodology. Furthermore, the article highlights the strong influence of pharmaceutical companies in the marketing of these therapeutic agents, which use the strategy of “off-label” use of drugs, that is, their therapeutic use also for other pathologies, in addition to those for which they have obtained authorization from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), with possible economic benefits for pharmaceutical companies and investors. The “off-label” strategy seems to be one of the cornerstones of the marketing operations of the pharmaceutical industry.
