The authors may be interested in reading (and replying?) to a post, by Ronald Pies, made in response to the original io9 article. Pies gives a brief shoutout to antidepressants increasing neural growth. This move is, I suspect, where most psychiatrists will leave their thinking. But the critical feature is that this kind of explanation is always after the fact and always crucially linked with the desire to continue prescribing antidepressants. None of this means that BDNF might not, somehow, be causally related to depression (though I doubt it), but it does mean that we should be skeptical.
