I am trained in conventional psychiatry and have a research background in molecular neuroscience. I have worked extensively in addiction settings and am Board-Certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. I am also in recovery from mental illness myself. Over my years of practice, I have become disenchanted by the questionable scientific basis of much of what I have been taught to do. Furthermore, the evidence base I do have—i.e., my patients and what they tell me—frequently argues against the “evidence” I’ve been taught to accept. I do prescribe medications but only when there is a clear need, my patient is fully informed of the risks, and we have formulated a plan to discontinue medication after a certain period of time. Most importantly, I try to educate and empower my patients to know what they have the ability to change, which is usually far more than what today’s psychiatry expects of them.
