I do individual and family therapy, at times with a co-therapist. I encourage no or minimal antipsychotic medication, and/or short-term sleep medication, in consultation with a collaborating psychiatrist if desired, and seeking peer and family support versus hospitalization if at all possible. I see psychotic breakdown as mostly psycho-social in origin and in the healing process.
I recommend taperingĀ to those on meds, starting as soon as possible and clinically right, and if they are interested I show them research which supports the wisdom of tapering. I can refer to an M.D. who will more directly supervise, and/or recommend an online manual or a book for giving more specific directions for tapering than I can give. While this is happening, during our therapy I help the client evaluate how the tapering is going.
