John McCarthy, Founder of Mad Pride Ireland, Dies at 61

John McCarthy, well known in Ireland  and beyond for his efforts to reform psychiatric care and protect the human rights of people in the mental health system, died Tuesday after a two-year-fight with motor neuron disease. A poet, writer and newspaper columnist, McCarthy, who had experienced the system as a patient, founded Mad Pride Ireland in 2008.
