John McCarthy, well known in Ireland and beyond for his efforts to reform psychiatric care and protect the human rights of people in the mental health system, died Tuesday after a two-year-fight with motor neuron disease. A poet, writer and newspaper columnist, McCarthy, who had experienced the system as a patient, founded Mad Pride Ireland in 2008. The Irish Examiner has published several tributes to him (1, 2, 3), as has the Cork Independent newspaper.
Mad in America hosts blogs by a diverse group of writers. These posts are designed to serve as a public forum for a discussion—broadly speaking—of psychiatry and its treatments. The opinions expressed are the writers’ own.
