Shire Seeks to Overcome European Resistance to ADHD Medication

Bloomberg reports that “The European debut of a pill to treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder faces a major hurdle: convincing people the condition exists,” as Shire seeks to extend its market through the introduction of its ADHD medication Vyvanse to eight European countries. ““There’s been a great deal of resistance to even believing there is a disease,” said the president of the European Brain Council, a non-profit representing doctors, patients and companies that work on neurology and psychiatry issues. “Parents are loath to get their child labeled. Children are easy or difficult, that’s the diagnosis in society.”

  1. Shire wants to make billions.

Shire’s “Vyvanse” is another big pharma SCAM !

They reformulated the old drug Dexedrine by doing some chemical hocus-pocus trick to make it “long acting” and of course get an exclusive patent and a multi-billion dollar share of the ADHD drug market !!

Vyvanse takes like an hour to begin working so you drag for well over an hour in the morning, then the peak is too high followed by an extended crash 5 times longer than Adderal or Dexadrine IR.

Oldschool Dexedrine IR , is the ADD med the US airforce gives its pilots for long missions cause its the best for attention hands down. Those planes are expensive.

Vyvanse is just the new gimic in order for Shire to be able to keep a steady cash flow cause their patent on Adderall expired in 2009. There is also some talk online claiming the way it works is damaging to the liver.

Adderall was the gimic to keep a steady cash flow cause Dexedrine is an old generic drug. Adderall was originally formulated to be a diet pill, its the 1970’s diet aid, known as Orbitrol. Then it was repackaged and sold as Adderall around the time when ADD-HD was “invented” in 1987.

That’s how these fraudsters operate, selling an inferior product as new and improved, just another days work for the selling sickness industry.

  2. This article in a business publication is classic. It couldn’t be more clear what is going on. If you want to sell a drug, you have to invent a disease. It would be good to pull out this article when in a discussion with open-minded people about the meaning of psychiatric drugs.

  3. As a former hyperactive kid, I can say, the only reason they make long acting meds are because hyper kids are hell on earth come medication time. I tried every long acting med and each one had 5 hours of hell, weren’t direct enough and I couldn’t take a lesser dose or not take it if I didn’t need it all day. I tutor German grad students and I heard her yelling because her dealer had adderall. The idea that abuse is like the 1960’s where people are injecting it is absurd. I have told moms on some ADHD boards that claim they cant take pills, the patch falls off, the liquid makes them sick that I tried all of those tricks too. They are making strip forms of amphetamine, dexedrine and ritalin soon too. science daily had an article suggesting long acting ritalin for cocaine addiction too. The abuse potential aspect is absurd because the loss of appetite and being able to go for hours to get things done is the motivation. It is even being approved for binge eating disorder. They tried depression and schizophrenia but those failed.
