BrainBlogger has an interview with Gary Greenberg, psychotherapist and author of The Book of Woe: The DSM and the Unmaking of Psychiatry. “The (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) provides the key to the health care treasury, whether you’re a person suffering from emotional distress and trying to get money from your insurance company for treatment, or a researcher trying to get a grant to study a particular mental problem,” says Greenberg.

  1. Follow the money. I wonder what percentage of money which could be spend on actual healthcare (or things that improve “mental health” such as social programmes, housing etc.) are wasted in the psychiatry-pharmaceutical complex.

    • In the UK over £200 million of Public money is spent every year on biomedical research.

      The state of Psychiatry in the UK is a lot worse than it was a generation ago; and the only evidence of enduring recovery from “serious mental illness” in the UK has come from non biomedical means.
