From Mad in Sweden: On October 14, 2024, Kaliber broadcast a report on P1 about the situation in psychiatry at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. It is far from the first time that Sahlgrenska University Hospital has been scrutinized in the media. It often happens in less flattering contexts. Children who are repeatedly put in a seatbelt. A psychologist who behaved sexually without limits, where a subsequent police report has disappeared. Unlawful deprivation of liberty of both patients and SiS staff and an employee who deliberately tried to get infected with Covid-19. At best, these reports have resulted in a minor public debate and a symbolic IVO report with the subsequent “oh my god!”. Often it has been relegated to collective oblivion already after the headlines. That healthcare not only can, but often actually does harm is a truth few want to acknowledge. There is a kind of societal cognitive dissonance here – because how can something called healthcare simultaneously cause harm? We all have an inherent need to feel that there is help available if our own health fails, and therefore we would much rather turn a blind eye to the suffering that psychiatry tends to subject people to.
