From Mad in Italy: Within a few years, labels such as ADHD, Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DCD), which includes Oppositional Provocative Disorder (PDO) and Conduct Disorder (DC), Emotional Dysregulation have entered the daily language of teachers, parents and practitioners. What was once interpreted as a set of behaviors more or less far from average – lively temperament, school difficulties, phases of opposition, emotional sensitivity – today is increasingly recoded as “neurodevelopmental disorder”, that is, as an expression of a biological alteration of the nervous system, often presented as hereditary. At the same time, terms born in contexts of activism and inclusion, such as “neurodiversity” and “neurodivergence”, have been progressively absorbed by clinical discourse and used to support the idea of an organic and stable basis of new diagnoses, losing part of their original meaning.
