High-profile Psychiatrist Criticized for Remote, Politicized Diagnosing

The Associated Press reports on Fox television and Tufts University psychiatrist Keith Ablow, who routinely diagnoses President Barack Obama without ever having met him, and labels Obama with various mental disorders, “abandonment issues,” and a “victim’s mentality.” Other psychiatrists state that they are embarrassed by how Ablow’s practices reflect on the psychiatric profession as a whole.

“Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chairman of psychiatry at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, said Ablow seems more interested in entertaining than in reflecting well on his profession,” reports the Associated Press. “Lieberman is past president of the American Psychiatric Association, which discourages members from speculating on psychiatric characteristics of non-patients.”
