“What do you complain about if your baby is well?” : The Trap of Medicalized Childbirth

From Mad in Puerto Rico: “Many people already had a plan about what they wanted, how they wanted to give birth, how they wanted to meet their baby, and suddenly they lose control completely because there’s a supposed danger. And we have to rush to the intervention. They’re creating complication after complication of performing an intervention that wasn’t necessary. Because with each intervention, the risks increase. So, yes, we end up putting people’s lives at risk, because a C-section is a major surgery, and it has other risks. It also affects the natural bonding process that’s supposed to occur with the baby, ideally putting the baby to your breast or trying to breastfeed.”
