Richard Lewis – Long Bio

ADDICTION, BIOLOGICAL PSYCHIATRY, AND THE DISEASE MODEL

Richard D. Lewis, MEd, has worked with addictions for the past 19 years in a community mental health clinic in New Bedford, MA. He earned his B.S. in psychology from the University of New Hampshire in 1970 and completed a Masters of Education degree in Counseling Psychology at Cambridge College in 1991. In between the two degrees, he worked and organized in factories for 8 years and engaged in post-1960s revolutionary activism. Richard discusses the relationship of the understanding and treatment of addictions to other related symptoms of severe psychological distress that are often labeled as a “disease” and/or a so-called “mental illness.”
