A psychologist and disability rights attorney argue that a recent JAMA article proposing the idea of a return to building asylums for the mentally ill is misguided and based on many false assumptions.

“The homelessness and criminal-justice issues that people with serious mental illnesses experience are primarily due to poverty and substance abuse,” write the authors in Philly.com. “Illusory ideas about the role of mental illnesses in these social problems lead to illusory solutions.”
