Cruel Country by Wilco

This week’s Song of the Week was suggested by Ken Lacilla:

“This song epitomizes the polarized state of our country’s psychology and our oversimplification of what it means to love ones country or to be heard in this country in spite of or because of our cruelty. Jeff Tweedy’s quiet melody and simple lyrics lend themselves to introspection and the song makes a powerful observation that points out the cognitive dissonance needed to both love our country and in effect love each other. Its first person perspective challenges the listener by its self admission of being ‘like a child’ while questioning the wisdom of ‘singing in the choir’.”
