From Mad in Puerto Rico: For more than two decades, John sought support for his emotional distress, altered states and episodes of suicide. His first hospitalization was in 2002, which helped him stabilize, but then he returned to the cycle of paranoia and self-harm, which led his mother to request that he be hospitalized again. He had several attempts to end his life after this, and after each one he was hospitalized. His family was not afraid that he would hurt them, but they worried about him, fearing that one day they might wake up and find him dead.
