From WFAA: Many patients who check themselves into psychiatric hospitals voluntarily may have difficulty when attempting to check out. In one recent incident in Denton, Texas, a teenage girl was threatened by staff when attempting to leave a psychiatric hospital, leading to a physical confrontation between the staff and her family.
I remember being a very unhappy voluntary patient and starting to make noises about going home. I was advised “not to try to do that” in a rather sinister fashion. As long as there is involuntary psychiatry, there can be no truly voluntary psychiatry (I think I stole that line from Thomas Szasz).
