Why Therapy Harm Is So Difficult to Report

Mad in the UK: When someone seeks therapy, they are often already carrying more than they can comfortably manage. They may be distressed, frightened, grieving, overwhelmed, isolated or trying to make sense of experiences they have never spoken about before. They may have waited months for support. They may be under pressure from work, family, finances or poor health. They may simply be trying to get through each day. At that point, we ask them to become careful consumers of a complicated and fragmented marketplace. They are expected to understand different types of therapy, compare qualifications, check whether a practitioner belongs to a voluntary register, work out what those registers mean, identify warning signs, assess whether someone is safe and decide what to do if something feels wrong.
