“This song speaks to the reprehensible way in which people are often treated when hospitalized. The singer is being ostracized and forcibly cut off from even contacting his girlfriend, in order to ‘protect her’. His confusion, anxiety and sense of desperation and isolation are palpable, as is the lack of agency he experiences at the hands of ‘mental health professionals’. To me, the lack of compassion shown by the staff, and the institution generally, illustrates the demeaning and disrespectful way in which psychiatry so often ‘treats’ people who are suffering, and who are most in need of compassion and empathy.”
