A classic experiment demonstrated that rats who had access to a full social life clearly chose not to ingest opiates, if given the choice, while rats deprived of a social life became addicted. This telling of the story in comic form is very helpful in seeing the significance; that mere exposure to a drug is not sufficient to explain its effects, outside of the social context.
