My Drug Dealer Was a Doctor: A Story of Withdrawal

In this piece for Medium, Michael E. Lee tells his story of experiencing the horrific withdrawal effects of Effexor, and how he healed from his depression through mindfulness and spirituality.

“What’s the drug? Effexor. It will bring you to your knees. Literally. That heroin addict you see on television that’s curled up on the bathroom floor, sweating, throwing up and paralyzed. Yeah that was me. All from a drug that our government says is safe. No one told me this would happen when I went on these meds. No one told me shit about the fact that withdrawing or ‘tapering’, as the medical community likes to call it, would be equal to getting off heroin or detoxing from alcohol.”
