If it is not “mental illness”, what is it then?

From Mad in Norway: Psychiatrist Erik Falkum writes in his book “What is psychiatry?” from 2023: “The medical gaze focused on the ‘missing’ patient, and if the agent ignores or does not have an affinity for it, which is important for the patient and for the social and existential context, the symptoms occur, the patient is ‘reduced’ to their suffering.” Mindset is an important factor that governs how we understand the world and how we try to solve our problems. We should therefore ask ourselves what psychosocial dysfunctions basically revolve around ontologically and how we can best understand them epistemologically.
