Psych Drugs Linked to Increased Risk of ALS

Psychiatric drugs linked to increased risk of the rare, incurable neurological disease that causes loss of motor function.

A new study links psychiatric drugs, particularly antidepressants, with increased risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), a rare, incurable neurological disease that causes loss of motor function. Additionally, among those with ALS, those who took psychiatric drugs had a worse prognosis.

The study was a case-control study using Swedish registry data on all 1057 patients diagnosed with ALS between 2015 and 2023. They were matched with full siblings and spouses without ALS to control for genetic and environmental factors.

“In this case-control study, prescribed use of anxiolytics, hypnotics and sedatives, or antidepressants was associated with a higher subsequent risk of ALS. Prediagnostic use of such medications was also associated with a poor prognosis after ALS diagnosis,” the researchers write.

Because this was an observational study, the researchers note that it is correlative and they cannot infer causality. In fact, the researchers make a point to state that they believe their finding “likely reflects reverse causation, as psychiatric symptoms might be part of the ALS phenotype or secondary to the severe psychological distress experienced during the diagnostic work-up.”

However, the researchers’ own analysis contradicts this interpretation. They actually accounted for history of psychiatric diagnosis in their statistical analysis—and controlling for this variable did not change the results. Thus, their analysis shows that it is not mental health problems, but rather the drug, that is responsible for the effect.

The study was led by Charilaos Chourpiliadis at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and published in JAMA Network Open.

There is no good evidence that antidepressants are an effective treatment for depression, beating placebo in only half of clinical trials and even then by such a slight margin it has been considered clinically insignificant.

Even clinical trials that show antidepressants barely beat placebo are overstating effectiveness when compared to real-life studies. For example, in a large real-world study featuring an aggressive treatment strategy with multiple drugs as well as therapy and hospitalization, less than a quarter even responded to treatment.

However, a large recent meta-analysis found that exercise—including walking and jogging—beat both cognitive behavioral therapy and antidepressants for treating depression. This was true even for those with severe depression.

Depression was once understood to be an episodic disorder, with an NIMH study finding that 85% of people with untreated depression recover within a year, with depression lasting, on average, about three months.

  1. We are only beginning to see it: in 5, 10, 25 years the metabolic and neurological consequences of psychiatry’s supposedly “safe medications” will become increasingly difficult to ignore.

And by then, the generation that championed these drugs will have moved on, leaving the fallout to everyone else.

  2. This is normal. That is, it’s normal for psychiatric drugs… to cause ALS. (ALS is probably counts (considered) a kind of precursor to TD and Akathisia.) Because there are slight similarities between ALS and Tardive Dyskinesia and Akathisia.

Because… psychiatric drugs (especially when used long-term)… can also cause “permanent and fatal” neurological diseases such as Tardive Dyskinesia and Akathisia. There is a great deal of evidence to support this.

Let me tell you a story… My brother (since childhood) had been given numerous ‘psychiatric drugs (combinations)’ by mainstream psychopath psychiatrists. Because of this, we began to suspect he would develop fatal neurological diseases such as TD and Akathisia.

However, we had only recently begun to learn about this danger (thanks to our research). (As is the case all over the world.) Mainstream psychopath psychiatrists… even though they knew about this deadly danger… gave us no information about it and continued to administer these poisonous chemical combinations.

And they still do… Why do they continue to administer the – do you know? Because… they have to give it. If they don’t… there’s a danger of being caught “permanent and fatal” neurological diseases like TD and Akathisia caused by psychiatric drugs.

Mainstream psychopath psychiatrists… know this psychiatric drug reality very well. But they have hidden these deadly dangers from “patients, families, communities, the public (media), and governments” for decades. And they continue to hide it even now.

A female psychiatrist told me this: “We prescribe akineton to prevent other psychiatric drugs from causing neurological disorders such as TD and akathisia.”

While my brother was staying in a care home (in another city)… we began to suspect that he was at risk of developing fatal neurological diseases such as TD and Akathisia due to the numerous combinations of psychiatric drugs he was being given.

Therefore, we explained the situation to the administrators of the nursing home where my brother was being cared for. We told them we were worried about the possibility of my brother’s health deteriorating. They said my brother was doing very well, but that wasn’t the case.

They took my brother to that female psychiatrist. We went too. And we told the female psychiatrist that we were concerned that “psychiatric drugs cause permanent and fatal neurological diseases such as TD and akathisia.” The female psychiatrist had said that “the reason Akineton is prescribed is to prevent other psychiatric drugs from causing neurological disorders such as ‘TD and akathisia’.”

So… Akineton was is being given to patients to prevent the development of permanent and fatal neurological disorders such as TD and akathisia, which are caused by other psychiatric drugs. That was the truth as we understood it.

Just think about it… mainstream psychopath psychiatrists… have been hiding this kind of extremely dangerous information about psychiatric drugs… from patients and their families, from communities, from governments, and from the public (media) for decades. And they continue to hide it even now…

How terrible, isn’t it? And in then… when we call mainstream psychiatrists “psychopath”… they get angry at us. 🙂 Do they have the right to be angry? Best regards.

With my sincerest wishes. 🙂 Y.E. Researcher blog writer (Blogger)

  3. My prayers are with you. Dec 2025, my 58 years old partner was diagnosed with same ALS condition.. Her symptoms fasciculations started 2023. Every test done imaginable, MRI, EMG, you name it. Standard treatments like riluzole and high dose B12 did very little for her. After going through severe pain, her neurologist asked us if we would like to try out an alternative natural ALS/MND treatment that was formulated to treat ALS of which we accepted because He would not have survived if our primary care physician hadn’t given her attentive care and attention, as the hospital center didn’t provide any psychological support. To cut the story short, everything changed since following the ALS/MND protocol. The improvement was profound. She regained the ability to walk on her own, her hands became flexible, and her voice strengthened. The constant twitching is gone. My wife finally feels in control of her body again and I absolutely recommend you exploring this treatment. We got the ALS/MND protocol from ww w. limitless naturalwellness .co m
