From Mad in Brasil: Despite the popular name “antidepressants”, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (IRS) are a class of medications widely prescribed for psychiatric and non-psychiatric conditions, such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, among others. Initially considered almost free of side effects, post-marketing data indicate a high prevalence of these effects, with sexual dysfunction being the most common. The initial leaflets stated that less than 5% of patients in clinical trials reported sexual dysfunction.1 However, more recent studies indicate that up to 88% of patients who use these drugs have some type of sexual dysfunction associated with treatment.
