Mad in Norway International Film Festival Film Review: The Art of Living

Our Mad in America affiliate, Mad in Norway, is hosting an international film festival from September 24-26 in Lillehammer, Norway. Each week, we will feature a film. This week is The Art of Living.

This short film tells the story of Anniken, a young woman who struggled with self-criticism and feelings of worthlessness that began in adolescence. Comparing herself to others led to self-loathing, which worsened over time and culminated in a serious, planned suicide attempt during high school. She survived thanks to the quick actions of a caring friend and her mother.

The film focuses on resilience and recovery, showing how inner strength and supportive relationships—especially with her family—played a key role in her healing. It highlights how meaningful human connections can be during life crises and how her experience ultimately deepened her family’s relationships.

It also touches on sources of comfort and inspiration in her life, including her dog Potter and her passion for theater, where she now finds joy and self-expression. Overall, the film emphasizes hope, connection, and the possibility of finding a new path forward.

This and many other films will be presented at the Mad in Norway International Film Festival in Lillehammer, Norway September 24 – 26, 2026. Please visit Mad in Norway International Film Festival’s website at madinnorwayfilmfest.org to find out more about festival programming, tickets, and other information. We hope to see you there!
