The State Found Guilty of Human Rights Violations – A Historic Victory in the Court of Appeal

From Mad in Norway: Inger-Mari Eidsvik, together with Føniks Lawyers and support from ICJ-Norway (the International Commission of Jurists), has been through many rounds in court to have it established that the Norwegian state has violated human rights through involuntary treatment in mental health care. The appeal deadline recently expired, and it is therefore clear that the ruling will stand. I spoke with Stine Moen of Føniks Lawyers about the significance of the ruling.

It is a great and important victory,” says Moen. The court has established that Inger-Mari Eidsvik’s rights under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 7 of the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights — which is the prohibition against torture — were violated in connection with forced medication and the use of isolation.
