From Mad in Italy: Over the last twenty years, the use of antidepressants has grown steadily in Europe and worldwide. In many countries, consumption has doubled, in some even tripled, especially among young adults and adolescents. SSRI and SNRI antidepressants (selective serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors respectively) have become commonly used drugs: prescribed by general practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, sometimes even for disorders other than depression (anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, premenstrual disorders) (1).
